Witrand Hospital as it is known within the Province is one of the institutions with a rich history of specialised services dating back to the early

1800’s,currently serving as a referral Hospital while rendering  a  comprehensive hospital based mental health and Rehabilitation services to other

 institutions  within the North West province. The Hospital is situated in Potchefstroom within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.During 1899 – 1902

the farm Witrandjies also known as Witrand where the Hospital is situated was captured by British soldiers aspart of the Anglo-Boere War.  Theymade buildings out of zinc & wood and the buildings were known as Cantonments. These cantonmentshoused between three to four thousand soldiers.

From 1923, Witrand Hospital was used for many different types of patients, called many names, yet always related to the intellectual / mentally
